I didn't know they were  aluminum.  Thought they were cast.  Draw file the surface to see if there are some hi spots.  Also, if you run a surface grinder on them, I would be concerned about the recess the thermostat sits in.  It may not have enough room for the thermostat to sit in.  Then too, maybe it was surface ground before, and the thermostat can not now sit low enough
