Subject: RE: Mowing down seed corn

Central Nebraska

I lot of seed corn in central Nebraska got planted in a very short window.  I've got one field this year and it was supposed to be a 50 GDD male delay.  This means that that male is supposed be planted 50 growing units after the female.  This is generally 2-5 days later.  With the wet spring a lot of the 50 unit delays got changed to one time plants meaning we did male and female on the same pass through the field.  The male rows were then mechanically delayed by mowing them off a few inches when they were about 8 inches tall.  So far it appears to be working.  My females got detassled over the weekend (final kid walk through) and it appears that the silks are turning pink now.  The males are still throwing pollen and will be destroyed in approximately two weeks.
