Can you tell if the cartridges themselves feel empty or still have some weight to it? the sensor on the printer could be going bad that monitors ink levels which basically just means you need a new printer either way. In terms of brands Xerox, Canon, Brother, HP, Epson are all decent choices. Kodak to me has fallen off over the years. check on this printer. not sure of the reason but it is selling for a fraction of its normal price. possible it is being phased out for a newer model or something but for the price worth looking into if the ink isn't super costly.

Yes, I suspect the cartridges are really empty as they start to skip printing when it indicates near empty / empty.
