Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow | Did you ever notice in the fall when the soybeans drop their leaves that the majority of those leaves have disappeared by late Nov. On the other hand, the stems (even the chopped stems) last thru the winter. I never checked but I assume the earthworms make short work of the leaves.
The biologists claim that the layer of leaves under the deciduous trees of the Northern Tier of the Eastern North America was much thicker before the colonists introduced the European earthworms. They say that the Glaciers eliminated certain types of earthworms which weren't re-introduced until the 1600-1700's. |
