NEMO | There are some hidden benefits to a sale barn....manure, top hand or two that you could use at your feedlot while not working sale barn, secretary for barn could be utilized for your other farm paperwork, etc. Hopefully good facilities to do some sideline cattle stuff like AI heifers and have regular access to a vet. The hay, hedge post and miscellaneous auctions already mentioned were good and valid ideas.
The number of 10,000 head a year sounds low, but I don't know your area. Around here in the winter lots of sales push 1500 (weekly) or 3000 (every other week) a sale, so close to 6000 a month. Probably different deal with the numbers you are talking and maybe manageable with your feedlot, but still bet needs to be full time.
I used to say that I'd rather try and fail than to never try at all! The older I get and more mouths depending on me changes that mindset a little. Again, good luck in whatever you decide. | |
