Northeast Missouri | Whatever you do, don't just offer to "turn it in" as a livestock liability insurance claim. They usually pay off well, but as another poster said, the event itself may stay sour for a long time.
Her garden is likely as important to her as your cattle are to you & your son, so think of fixing the damage in those terms. She probably doesn't want dollars, she wants a nice looking garden and the produce she had planned on.
Like others have said, replace the lost produce. But beyond that the *best* thing you can do is offer to personally help with getting her garden back in shape...do you need to cut out the damaged cabbages? Cut out & replant the green beans (as someone else mentioned)? Fill & smooth over hoof tracks? Straighten pushed-over tomato stakes, etc.? Hoe a few weeds along with her?
The personal touch will be your best solution to this, and will solidify your relationship with that landlord (and your reputation in the community!) for a long time to come. But don't do it for "you", do it for her.
