Will this place help remedy your muddy calving conditions issue?
If not, I think I'd be a little hesitant to get into somthing that, although looks like a good opportunity, doesn't put you in a better position with the stock you currently have.
If by leasing this place, you will have a better calving situation than you have at the he place... Then I'd say the cost to drill a well will be a heck of a lot cheaper than building shelter facilities at home.
I just bring that up, because I remember how difficult a time you were having a few months ago... And I think you should make it your top priority to make sure your not in that position again. That may or may not include this new farm.
I think your place is like mine, in that there are only so many dollars to be spent in a year... I have to prioritize where money gets spent... Sometimes that means leaving an opportunity alone to improve what I already have.
Good luck in whatever route you take.
Thanks for the kind words.
Yes and no to solving the mud issues, but it would be a step in the right direction as I wouldn't have as much manure and bedding pack built up. Instead of feeding the cows for 6 months and then calving them out there, I could start feeding them at home a few weeks before calving. Big difference between feeding them there all winter. I've been fighting the mud for the past 5 years with the wet years. This scenerio won't totally solve the issue but it would certainly help.
And buck is right, some years if get little grazing but some years I could save substantially on feed costs.
So I really don't know how to pencil it all put or even if you can. What's the going rate or what can a person figure for corn stalk grazing per head per day? |
