There's a product called Wandering Shepherd that's a bolus that communicates over cellular signal to give you animal location, temperature, and claims it can even do heat detection.

Doesn't look like it's gone into production yet, though. Maybe it won't, I don't know. Seems like it would be a nice bit of tech IF it works and the cellular providers offer reasonable rates. That would be one heck of an expensive "family plan" otherwise :)
