Subject: RE: Paying your kids to work on the farm

NC Iowa

I think I was about 12 when my dad asked me if I wanted to be paid $10 an hour and I buy all my own clothes and stuff outside the farm, or he will pay for clothes and small allowance and I work for free. Well I was cheap so I worked by the hour.  I was making pretty good money, learned to be frugal at age 12 and manage money.  I wouldn't change my decision or how it worked out now.   Most young adults are terrible with money, and they really aren't to blame, there parents coddled them and handed them money whenever they wanted it.  Once they get older they realize the money tree doesn't exist.

It would be much harder now, we had a farrow to finish operation so there was always work that could be done. I think the most important things to instill into a young person;
1. You want to buy something and need money? Go work, that's where money comes from.
2. You are responsible for saving and only spending what you make.

Good luck.
