If you examine them closely it's easy to tell the difference. Ants have three distinct segments, the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. Termites are almost cigar shaped, with much less definition between body segments. Also, the ants will have a longer wing over top of a shorter wing, while termites have similar sized wings top and bottom.
Their behavior when swarming like that is common to both, although being in a window like you said seems more common to termites.
If your house sits right on the ground like you said, treating for them will be really difficult if not impossible. If they are really established under your home, and you want to continue using it, you should consider lifting it and placing it on a new foundation that is pretreated for termites.

If you have ants, they would likely be carpenter ants. Very tough to get rid of also. A professional pest control guy should get involved with your deal either way.
