Huh. Setting up the Windows 8.1 2-in-one laptop we got for the niece.

This is the first time I've worked with windows 8.

I can mostly figure it out, if I take long enough.

Trying to back up the system - mirror image - sure is an experience. Doesn't work to a thumb drive.

Doesn't work to a USB hard drive.

Got a USB DVD drive, and it errors out on that - turns out on 8.1 they deleted some code so I need to format the DVD on my desktop, before inserting it into the new laptop and then I can ignore the error and it goes ahead and backs up. See if I need to format one or two more DVDs to get it done.

It doesn't look promising when the initial step they suggest you do (I realize I'm the only one to make a backup of a new computer.....) doesn't work.

I see the adware junk preinstalled on them is more and more chiseled into the operating system don't know if I will bother to try to remove that gunk. Kids just click on all the sites that install it right back in anyhow, why bother. It appears W8 is just designed to put that adware right there in front of you. No wonder actual business users hate this os so much.

Now to decide which antivirus to use. Macaffe is preinstalled, 30 days or whatever; Kapritzky or whatever its called came free on a CD for 1 year; and I've been a big fan of Avast free, has worked for me for many years now, but I don't know what to do on someone else's machine. Probably rip out Mcaffie and put Avast in. Seems like the junk adware spam actual malicious folk are so prolific they will soon outrun the antivirus folks anyhow, nothing will work.

Heck, the USB DVD writer came with a DVD to install it. Looked at the DVD before installing, and they weren't installing any drivers or useful stuff, just 7 programs of adware/ 30 day trial crap that would clog up the system.

Goofy. Any more, and they should be paying us to buy a preloaded computer/hardware, all we are buying is an ad box, not a useful device.....
