Subject: Wisconsin 2 cylinder engine problems

Southeast SD
Guys - have a 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine on a scissor lift. Friend of mine was using it and can not get it started now. We were messing with it last night and found that the center electrode of the distributor cap was missing. So we ordered a cap (won't be here till Tuesday) but we were able to get a little ball point pen spring in there and a round piece of copper and we now have decent spark at the plugs but not as nice and hot as we have at the coil wire. All we can seem to get out of it is a little popping... doesn't really ever try to run. Could the cap be bad enough that it's just not providing a hot enough spark? We are going to try new plugs and that new cap Tuesday but just thought maybe someone else had some ideas. Have 120 psi of compression on both cylinders too. Tried misting starting fluid across the intake tube to the carb while cranking and still wouldn't even want to fire let alone run...
Wisconsin engine model # W2-1250 I think. (tag was pretty bad)
Thanks guys.
