Subject: RE: New hay ground

Southern IL
Ive had good luck, by drilling wheat in the fall, then mixing red clover and orchard grass in your spring dry urea. (spread here about late Feb) I had the co-op double spread it, came up nice and even. You will still get a cutting of "stubble-clover" the first year about September. The next year will be really nice hay, I have some that this will be the 3rd year, its about 60% orchardgrass and 40% clover now. My first year seemed to be heavy in clover. I got 3 cutting last year. If I recall correctly I put out about 12-15# of red clover and about 10-12# of orchard grass. Makes very good cattle feed. I sell the 3rd cutting small squares. Alfalfa is good, but I found it was to high of maintenance for me and my cattle, and my hay buyers didn't want to pay for Alfalfa. good luck, im in southern IL.
