Just as a side note, one of my kids spent about $200 during the year for outside activities.  Pizza, ice cream a show or something.  When the budget was made for college the budget was, books, room, board, tuition.  A friend laughed and said that was ridiculous and the actual cost would be much higher. As I said the kid spent only $200 above those costs.  

Said kid now has an excellent job and no debt.
