Subject: RE: tearing down an old barn in Michigan

Kingston,Mi
The last training burn that Kingston Fire Department (plus neighboring departments) did required the removal of the asphalt shingles, electrical wiring, plumbing, most of the siding, windows, doors and all of the plaster/plasterboard. Not much left, but all items that might have contained lead paint or lead compounds were hauled away to a landfill at the owners expense. That left the structural frame, roof sheathing and exterior sheathing plus the sub floor. Would have been as cheap in the long run to have hired it hauled in its entirety to the landfill in refuse trailers and a lot less work by the owner and his sons.

The fire training council and specifically the Caro Fire Department have a "burn tower or building" for realistic fire training. Surround and drown can be taught with a brush pile. Training on actual donated buildings on fire ceased to be attractive about 20 years ago when an accident in a fire dept. training exercise in a house resulted in a death of at least 1 fireman.

edit: to correct spelling
