Just a quick note that may help someone in the future.

I saved my Excel file map as a pdf file for email.  It showed up on screen with density as I wanted it and printed fine also.  I went in and deleted my "shape lines" and it printed fine so we can distinguish patterns.

Also be sure to do the "Page setup" (%) in Excel for whatever size paper you intend to print on before saving as PDF.
