You are highlighting or shading some cells and then putting text into the cells if I understand correctly, but the cells are shaded too dark to allow the text to stand out? In that case, could the solution be as simple as using a lighter color or shade for the shaded cells? It's only a couple key strokes on newer versions, and believe there was such an option in the 2003 version as well.
