Central Nebraska | Chimel - 5/12/2015 03:35 Most Internet service providers assign such dynamic IP addresses to all computers. In Windows, you can open a Command Prompt window and type "ipconfig /release" to release your IP address and "ipconfig /renew" to get a new lease. It's one of the first things that the networking troubleshooter does for you, so I haven't used these commands for years. You'll most likely get the same IP address again if you renew shortly after releasing it or after the leases expired (it does it automatically) and of course, if you subscribed a special deal with your ISP to get a static IP address, for instance if you have a home server, stream music, etc.
This should be clarified. Most ISPs provide a dynamic IP address to the router or modem that is terminating their connection at the customers location. This is the WAN connection. The customers router then provides a dynamic IP address to the devices on the internal (LAN). When you do an ipconfig command you are seeing your internal IP address. The only way this would show you your WAN address is if your connection was plugged directly into your computer. |
