Thank you. That link was to a 2011 question/answer which lead to links about Windows 7 and earlier versions. Windows 7 is not giving me the "Activate Windows" watermark.
This laptop has Windows 8. I tried to upgrade to Windows 8.1 this afternoon, taking hours. Some where it failed to upgrade. I still have the watermark and when I go to PC Settings it says it is activated.
At this point I will probably continue to try to use it while constantly backing up data. I will try to contact Microsoft for assistance. Maybe I can buy Windows 10 when it comes out and reinstall that OS IF it appears this laptop is up to specs. I will probably be better served by buying a new laptop.

Edited to add that there is an error code in the "activation details" so apparently the message that says it is activated is in error. I plan to call MS tomorrow. Thanks again for providing the hope which may get this fixed.
