Subject: RE: Strawberry transplants

Growing up I worked on a produce farm. Had 25 acres of them at any given time. We planted them in the spring as early as we could. Pinch all the blossoms off the first year. It forces the plant to concentrate all of its energy on making a good root and leaf system. Align the runners as it shoots them into a row. Cultivate as needed.

They will crop the second through 5th year. We always plowed them under after 5 years. Production dropped. We kept them bedded with straw in the late fall before any major frosts, to keep them protected, they do not like extreme cold. Raked it off in the spring to between the rows. It acted as a bedding to prevent weeds and for customers to walk on. After harvest we mowed them off with a rotary mower. Subsoiled between the rows to remove human foot compaction and then used a rotary tiller after that. Sprayed 2-4D to control weeds somewhere around that time, can't remember for sure when. Gave them plenty of water in August, that is when bud set is for the following season.
