This whole conversation begs the question, if you will lose money storing corn in bins doesn't that just mean you lost money growing the crop anyhow so why plant the corn in the first place? Granted forward selling made more money last year but isn't it risky to forward sell a 100% of your crop. Forward selling is great if you know how the growing year will go but who knows that in advance?
Cash corn here last fall was $3.20 or less, now it's $4.20. I think bins paid me pretty well so far this year for the corn I didn't pre-sell last spring.
It's not one or the other. Its both strategies that works.
