I was "left out" of the family farm. I kinda/sorta know how you feel. Is my brother wrong for taking over, absolutely not. Was my father wrong for offering it to him and not me? Absolutely not. I chose a path to start having kids and get a "normal" job. You've already got that "normal" job. Let's face it, the hired man is requiring less capital than you will. Your father, and uncle, are teaching you a lesson that you don't quite understand right now. All in due time, all in due time. I'm SURE what they are doing (before they retire) is seeing whether or not you want to keep it going. You can make money anywhere. BUT, do you love the farm enough to forego money and do what's best for the business. I know firsthand, I stings, I KNOW that!!!! Bide your time, help when you can, and just be PATIENT!!!!!! My grandmother used to say "it'll all come out in the wash", it always does!!!

My bread and butter or the easy money in my job keeps me very busy and very profitable about 1-2 months before planting starts... then it dries up. When the ground thaws out I get busy. I make good money in a short amount of time. I own the equipment to do other work, but so do 100 other guys in my area. There isn't much money in the other work around here. What I do no one wants to mess with but yet there is actually very good money in it and it is quick easy work most of the time... Everyone wants the big jobs or the demolition jobs. I like those jobs too but I for one have learned there is no money in tearing down a house if you must follow all the EPA rules (just an example)... I chose to follow the rules, too much at stake not to...

As bad as I want to just distance myself it is hard too. For one, I could use the money. Also, my work is very seasonal. I don't see it becoming much more than that. I have had absolutely no luck in finding help (additional labor) with my business other than my dad here and there and the current hired man here and there and I really can't see it being that much more than it is. Maybe I am wrong.
