Get yourself (work) to a position of being successful in what you went to college for. You need experience in the world.
I believe that is what your Dad wants - the school of hard knocks, take a few blows, learn from the experience of working hard and rise above and become a successful businessman. Perhaps he feels that you shouldn't learn (be protected) in his shadow.
