Northeast Nebraska | Go work for a neighbor that is close to retiring. See if he will help you get started and take over for him. I came back to the farm right after college and started my business, then sold it and now help my father and another farmer. I picked up 260 acres this year from him and will pickup another 1300 in a couple of years of it works out.
My father barely pays me, but it's not about the money. I figure when he's ready to retire I'll farm all of his and will help me out on rent and machinery. The best thing I could of done was help run someones operation and learn how they run there farm. I've learned so much from my neighbors operation compared to just being involved on our familes. Pay your dues on your family farm and hopefully your day will come. If that day never comes you can say you've learned something atleast. | |
