It wasn't so much the income as it was the ability to gather more ground----------lots of only sons never came home and those often aging people sometimes coughed up the land to the local county treasurer that his son never had to go just for taxes. Then the treasurer would buy it without anyone knowing. There were tons of tricks pulled. All of my fathers family served and my mother worked in the volunteer munitions plants in CA.
