Subject: RE: alfalfa inputs?

Central Alberta
Alfalfa like K, P and S. Get a feed test done on the alfalfa. Ideally want a 2:1 ratio of K:Ca. If its lower add K if its higher reduce K. Soil tests may no be the best to see if there in enough K for alfalfa since it has deep roots. The roots can grow 6-8 feet a year for every year its in a crop. The roots will grow till they either hit the bed rock or water table. Take the percent protein divide by 6.25. This gives the percentage of N is the plant. Want as close to a 10:1 ratio of N:S. If the ratio is higher than 10:1 add sulfur. Want to try to have 0.3% P in the feed test and 0.25% Mg. Good luck.
