Educate an older guy who knows nothing about cotton, what is going on in the picture with the flames?
When that Bessemer was first used at the Burton gin, the ignition bonnets in the heads were originally heated with blow torches. It wasn't until later that the natural gas setup was adapted as you see in the picture. That sure is a neat engine. It had to be refurbished in order to use it again, since it had sat for so many years. A company from Houston donated the estimated $35,000 job and hauled it to their shop to repair.
