Sarcasm alert (and not for the current posters!), old newspaper likely has soy based ink on it and since most soybeans are GMO, only tragic results should be expected. If you are a devil may care sort of individual, the paper plus clippings is a good way to go and it recycles 2 possible waste stream products. We used grass clippings for years for this reason, Dad had them and lots of labor (6 kids) and a very large garden. I have used The Michigan Farmer that way also, open and place under the planted tomatoes, 1 issue from each side.
