South West UK
Insects and disease will attack any crop, whether in perfect health or not. Don't kid yourself some kind of magic fertility program can prevent pest attack.

Anyone who has farmed for more than 5 minutes realises this.

Not everything that happens in the world is aimed at benefiting the consumer. If that was the case, engine management technologies, EGR, SCR and Ad-blue would not have been introduced.

Anyway, since the consumer is primarily concerned with having low cost food, I would say they have forfeited any right to say what will or will not be done in production agriculture. If you ask the average UK citizen what kind of farming they want, it would be the sort you are more likely to see in museums today, some old guy with a horse pulling a cart. They don't like modern agriculture, they don't like the smells, they don't like animals kept intensively, they don't like farm machinery on the roads and they don't like modern machinery and fertilisers or chemicals or anything.

The farmer has 3 priorities only.

1. Keep his farm in the same or better shape than he inherited it in so his children or successor can work the farm in future.

2. Work within the existing legislative framework where the environment and animal welfare is concerned.

3. Do whatever it takes to make a profit, providing he keeps within rule 1 and 2.

None of you owe the consumer anything.
