You want to "extend" the display. When I go to Control Panel/Display, there is a choice on the left margin to connect to a projector. On mine, the following pops up. I can also get this selection to pop up by hitting Fn+F7. Choose Extend.
Once you've done that, then you can go into "change display settings" to switch which monitor is on the left
(you can even drag them up and down so you can move the mouse smoothly across the two
), which one is default, the resolutions of each, etc.
Also, to make a program appear on the second monitor, you need to make sure it is in Window mode (not full screen) and then drag it where you want it.
