Subject: Nitrogen type and placement discussion

SE IA
Current N program is spring NH3 at 55% of our total N needs, then 15% of total N needs with the planter, and then the remaining 30% at sidedress UAN.

I hate the NH3. Just about everything about it, the product, the erosion from scratching the knives in the dirt, the extra trip and compaction. The reason I do it is I want at least a majority of my N out preplant in case of worst case scenario and can't get the side dress done. And I like having my N banded.

I'm considering (next year) adding a set of saddle tanks to tractor and soil finisher and incorporating UAN. I like the idea of banded nitrogen vs using a spray boom to incorporate the N. Has anyone ever ran a hose/orfice behind the shovel sweeps on like the last set or two of shovels on a soil finisher in front of a harrow/rolling basket?

You could then have your N banded as well as incorporated, would save a trip of NH3. Just brainstorming here ( I haven't even measured the spacing of my shovels yet).

Any comments or shortcomings anyone can seenor think of?
