N FLA | This is the feedlot division, "death valley." Although probably looking better, but not comparable to my longer term rye grazing cows. We put this division together in January. Feeding 4 year old ryegrass silage from someone and corn screenings from the local deer corn place. Well the 4 year old silage has run out. I am back to my better quality rye silage put up last year.
We got the go ahead to build 900' of fence and use this pasture awhile. It's pretty rough with alot of blackberry or something similar. I was thinking maybe feeding silage on these spots could improve them? I am planning to spray Element 4, but maybe this will work too.
I feel like we didn't make much gain the last three months with the poor quality feed, but I knew my 100 tons of feed would not carry us to green grass. And I wanted better feed as calves drop. So I guess we did the best for the conditions. Cant complain about doing what it takes to get the cows bought, fed, and carried to green grass. Im not an accountant, but feed was about 0.80 per day. We should have fed more corn, but we couldnt be there everyday to topdress these wagons. And we only fill wagkns everh 3rd day.
We will continue to feed here until May. Though I'd like to get the pairs moved to better pastures before that. Most of the cows here are April to May calving. A few June and a few open cows.
This is ryegrass I am waiting for the custom guy to harvest and bag. It adds tonnage everyday. But I'd like good quality too. I hope he can get me a good feed put up soon. I think it will be about $30/ton production and harvest costs, we will see how it turns out. Its been a wet winter which helps on this sand without irrigation.
