Subject: Ditching cable/DirecTV

Central Nebraska

I've been a loyal DirecTV customer for 10+ years but I'm tired of their rate increases and crappy HD picture quality.  Last week I bought an over the air antenna and a small all-in-one PC and started the process of getting rid of the satellite.   Pretty much all the shows the wife and I watch are on on CBS and ABC anyway.  I installed MythTV on a virtual machine on my desktop PC to act as the TV server for recording our shows.  It pulls the OTA signal in via a Silicondust HDHomeRun device.  Then I installed Windows 7 and Kodi (XMBC) on the all-in-one PC and away we go.  We are watching our first recorded show this evening and the quality is amazing.  We already have Amazon Instant Video and may subscribe to Netflix and/or get a Roku device as well.  I figure that I'm working with $130/month so I can buy lots of gadgets and $10/month subscriptions.  I figure I have to try it for 6 months and if I hate it I'll go back to satellite or maybe our local IPTV service.
