A friend with a dairy about 10km away grew about 5Ha of maize this year for the first time. He has a pivot that does a half circle and did most of the irrigation with dam water and the last few irrigations with bore water. Maize has been grown here by different farmers and various times over the years and it does quite well usually. The cost is particularly high because of the irrigation and often it is easier, cheaper and more reliable to purchase hay grown from winter cereal crops. Here we need to grow 20t/DM/Ha to make it a profitable exercise. The farmer had discussed with me about us doing the harvesting, but as I have never used the corn front with my chopper and there was a lot of weeds in the crop I was cautious about doing it. He had an offer from a farmer and silage contractor who is almost 200km away to come and do it as he believes that more farmers up this way will want to grow maize and he wants to do the harvesting. I was relieved that I didn't have to do it. Anyway here are the pictures
