The key is continued patience and understanding. You are the adult, you need to be most forgiving and do most of the work to establish a good relationship, a bond of trust and love that automatically creates respect. I think it is a mistake to apply your childhood experience towards the boy, he is not you and you are not your parents; the environment and circumstances are completely different.
