Subject: RE: Negotiating on Cash Bids

Jesup, IA
My short list for getting better bids:

Sell in 5000 bu lots so it's easy for them to hedge it off.
Offer in "basis terms", ex "I'll sell 50,000 at 20 over"
Be willing to deliver when others don't (day after a holiday, during rough weather)
Have adaquate truck power to move it in quickly
Always deliver when promised, never come up short and need to renegotiate

Rarely do I say, "I'd sell 50,000 bu at a flat price." They need to find the right end user for the products. Maybe they only have 25,000 bu to move at 20 over, so they use your grain to fill that need, and then go back to the lower posted bid.

Also, maybe my comments only work well in an environment like mine. I have Flint Hills (x2) and Valero ethanol plants, Cargill, Penford, ADM plus several local feed mills to shop. If you only have a country elevator or two, maybe my advice is "not so much"
