Regardless of which way you go I would layer to get warmth and keep flexibility. For thicker jackets I would consider Berne or maybe Duluth. I have a Carhartt jacket and lined overalls but I'm not a fan of their bulkiness. I can tolerate the overalls pretty well but the jacket less so. Until temps hit below freezing I layer with long sleeve silk undershirt with turtleneck collar followed by a long sleeve high collar performance layer by Terramar( http://www.terramarsports.com ) and then a North Face windproof/waterproof shell. When temps go lower than freezing I layer the same way but would exchange the shell for a insulated jacket.
