| Interesting drawing comparing the space between the hard drive read/write head and the magnetic platter with other "objects" like human hair, a particle of cigarette smoke or a fingerprint. You can understand how easy it is for a hard drive to crash when you drop your laptop on the desk a little hard, and yet, they can withstand something like 10 Gs when running, even more when sleeping:
