Subject: RE: Steers with hogs?

Waupun, Wi
I have ran 10 pigs in the past behind roughly 150 Holstein steers. I would buy them as feeders and supplement with a little feed until they were about 80lbs and after that they were on their own. I also probably fed 30 lbs of soybean meal over the course of their life (seemed like this prevented them from biting tails. The protein?) In the future I would only do this on larger size steers or on cattle that have been castrated and fully healed. Last group of hogs I had were some Berkshire or some different cross and I had some younger steers with bands on. I believe one of them must have bled a little bit and the pigs smelled it. In the end the hogs killed him and continued eating into his stomach. Once pigs taste blood it is bad. As far as taste goes myself or other customers never complained. Probably finished 60 hogs out behind cattle in last 15 years. I once finished 110 hogs out on scrap cheese. Those things really grew and the kill sheet was very impressive!
