Farmington IL | No cliff notes but a little description.
First speaker was Mike Wells, DVM. Main topic was health protocol on incoming cattle. Answered questions on several topics.
Next was Dr. Tara Felix., U of IL. Talked about starting new cattle and getting them transitioned to finishing mode.
Dr. Galen Erickson from UN-L gave a presentation on feeding high amounts of silage compared to normal finish rations. He also gave a later presentation on the use of beta agonists in feedlot cattle. Lots of research and data.
They had a panel discussion with two producers who have built mono slopes. They shared their expirences from starting the process through using the manure as nutrients.
Last was a marketing firm giving some forecast. My take was that short term the cattle market could gain a little, maybe, but corn has a lot of upside and that could make cattle feeding real tough. Long term the only real problem is the increasing value of the dollar. Could slow everything down at some point.
It was put on by the U of IL extension service. Maybe 100 guys. We were at tables in a room with a projector and the speakers. Good meeting. Maybe roo has some thoughts? | |
