Subject: RE: Where did soil survey maps come from?

Kingston,Mi
One of the soil scientists that mapped the last township in our county, had worked for the Michigan Dept. Of Agriculture as a mapper then landed a contract to soils map in Indonesia and forever after was known as Borneo Bill. The Indonesian government was seeking suitable sites to move people to as to disperse their large population. The hired mappers were sent out to perform an initial survey to find sites where jungle clearing would result in minimal soil destruction, have soils that were adaptable to agriculture and had sufficient water resources among other items. Bill brought back a large slide set of the jungle, logging roads and the erosion they caused, views of some of the initial settlements etc. They were equipped with dirt bikes rather than trucks, some of the gullies coming down steep roads were deep enough to completely swallow a dirt bike, allowing him to step of 1 shoulder of the gully on to the dirt bike then on to the other shoulder without having to climb up or down. A couple of years of soils work in the jungle was sufficient for Bill.
