Tenn Valley | Organic matter will increase in the soil with crop residue - including weeds & grasses, cover crops, low use nitrogen crops, lower vs higher soil temps, the amount & kind of tillage. Organic matter will decrease with increase rainfall when combined with higher soil temps, frequent tillage, lack of & smaller amounts of soil residue, and to a limited amount, pH of the topsoil & subsoil. When with talk about building OM, we're pretty limited on what we can do. However, small changes in organic matter, especially soil with mono culture cotton for a hundred years with extensive tillage, will respond with organic matter building with crop rotation & limited tillage. | |
