Colby, Kansas | Sorghum doesn't show the hit to light residue as much due to as swne mentioned on the temps, but also its just less responsive to water (or a lack of water), so being a little shorter on soil moisture in the profile due to the light residue its not going to get dinged as hard.
I would lean hard to proso if you think you can make stripper head harvest on it work for you. Would get you some nice residue, maybe a little more header loss, but would definitely set you up better for going to a row crop afterwards.
The short season sorghums have gotten better for far eastern Colorado, not sure they are better enough for where you're at though. If you go sorghum would you plant or drill it? Might consider drilling, would have a bit better cover even in the case of a crop failure.
