Subject: RE: Planting corn after running soil finisher

I've done some "stale seed bed" planting in the past. Usually would work the ground then wait a week -10 days before planting. A nice rain in the mean time would give the ground a slight crust and help seal in moisture Biggest advantage is the moisture is stabilized in the soil so you know exactly how deep to plant. Mo worry about working ground, planting at what you though was the correct depth only to have the moisture level drop below seed depth.. Flip side is that you would get big rains then by the time it was ready to plant weeds / grasses were coming on or ground crusted too hard so you ended up working it again before planting. Worked fairly well when we were a STO but as we have expanded our operation we have gotten away from it. Also, in the past 40+ yrs, planter/ equipment technology has improved to the point we haven't done any in several yrs. Plus, back then nobody was wanting to plant early April like we do now. People use to think that anyone that planted corn in this area before the 1st of May needed their head examined. Now if you're not done planting beans by then people wonder what's wrong with you.
