Subject: Yuck! How to keep the slime out of dishwasher?

Texas/New Mexico Stateline
We have a basic Maytag dishwasher, that looks the same as all the entry level GE, Whirlpool plastic tub dishwashers. It has the ... grid, screen, whatchamacalit in the bottom under the spray arm. Round plastic grid, with radial fins. I'm having trouble coming up with the right word.

It builds up a ring of nasty goop around it after a month or two. And seems to effect the way it is cleaning. I think it might be fats and oils from food residue that is not washing out good.

To really clean it good I have to take the arm off, take screws out of the grid thing, and wash it in the sink. I was wondering if there was a trick, or a better detergent to eat that stuff up where it wouldn't build up?

Ug, I hate that job.
