Comon occurance around here. We call it GRABLING. I've never done it but have neighbors that do it on the creek that runs through our farm. Experts can tell if a catfish is in the hole by the feel of the bottom of the hole. Gravely means fish, slick means DON'T PUT YOUR HAND IN THERE!!! Never put your hand in the fish's mouth, grab him by the gills. If he is REAL big, use a rope and run it through the gills. I have seen ladders used so as to stay under the water to find the hole. Also have heard of 1 stranding on the other to keep them under. I have seen some really big cats caught this way.
