would never be without it that is the main cause of duramax injector issues the original filters were not low enough microns to do the job properly

Yes I have been running the Cat filters for many years.....no problems at all. I was a little worried about gelling in colder temps with the smaller micron filter but I have never had any issues. Maybe the micro size doesn't matter as far as gelling????

The AC Delco/Racor filters are fine. They are 4 micron versus the Cat being 2. Not a big deal, Cat's brochure for their filters says things 5 microns on up are what is damaging.

Nothing wrong with a Cat adapter though and the filters are cheaper than the AC Delco's.

So does this mean there is nothing a person can do to prolong the life of injectors in early Duramax/s?

Never has been really, just a bunch of suggestions that don't produce consistent results. Kind of like the crank breakage issue.

The biggest fix to the injectors were the actual fixes made to the injector itself. Any injectors installed the past 6 years likely have the most updated injectors.

Using a good filter like the racor/Delco or cat is one of the more important things along with buying good fuel to begin with.

run a good fuel lube and change filters often.

We have a buddy that bought an 03 ZF6 6 speed manual equipped Duramax brand new, and it has 183K plus on it, and its still on original injectors. He puts a lube treatment every tank, and IIRC filter gets changed at least once a year.

That brings up anothe question. Are you really bettering yourself by changing filters before the lite comes on or when filter life says 50% remaining vs 3% remaining?

I just do them every other oil change(7,500) at 15k or if it says something sooner.

Been running one for years. Only thing I don't like about is you lose the water separator so I added an extra filter on the frame before my lift pump. Its been proven time and time again that a dirty filter will filter better but will reduce flow. If you have a lift pump its not a big thing, otherwise it will put more stress on the cp3 sucking the fuel. I usually change mine everything 15,000 miles.

The OEM is 4, the 1R-0750 Cat is 2.

The main injector failures were ball seat erosion and cracked bodies.

Probably a lot of aftermarket filters are more than 4 microns but the racor/delco is 4 micron. So, use the racor or cat with adapter.

Parker Racor PFF50216 is the Delco TP3012

Parker rats it at 2 micron. see page 144 http://www.parker.com/literature/Racor/Racor_Mobile_Fuel_Filtration...

And page 7 here: http://www.parker.com/literature/Racor/Racor_Filtration_-_ParFit_Pa...

TP3012 is discontinued, TP3018 replaces it. Still the same rating IIRC. I'd have to spend more time looking into it but AFAIK last time I did it was 2 micron nominal 4 micron absolute.

The Cat 1R0750 everyone uses with the adapter was 2 micron absolute but IIRC it's changed to 4. Can't really find a definitive answer without more research.

Frankly I do not care to do the research because both filters are good filters and are at least 4 micron rating which is good enough.

Where? Haven't seen any official specs for it yet, they claim only a small change to aid in manufacturing. If its good enough to cover the new injection systems I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it.

I know this is an older thread but I just found this info out... explains a few things on the filter number change

http://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/maintenance/596921-new-fuel-filte...

EDIT: Forgot that may be a forum member only page so here is the details

More than just minor, read more...

The acDelco TP3012, commonly known as the relabeled Parker-Racor PFF50216 coalescing fuel filter, is visibly different from the new TP3018 filter, in that you can see thru the center of the element.

Since so many of us use the more value-priced PFF50216, the question has been raised as to whether we will also see these changes reflected in the Parker-Racor filter too.

Rest easy, it's not.
Confirmed; Parker-Racor no longer supplies the re-labeled acDelco TP3012 fuel filters.

The claimed "...minor internal part geometry change to aid in manufacturing..." also includes a change in who manufactures the TP3018, as it is No Longer Parker-Racor.

Since no performance test data is available for this new filter, I would highly recommend you go with an alternative to the TP3018 (unless you find old stock TP3012s).

Racor's PFF50216
or
Baldwin's BF9882

Good info, I had followed a few threads awhile back but there wasn't anything very conclusive and I didn't take the time to check things out any further.

The Racor filter is around the same price as the TP3012's. I'll get some of them around for the other trucks I work on.

Just decided to finally bite the bullet and get adapters for our trucks, the Cat filter is half the price from the dealer and I'm already there or getting stuff delivered anyways.

A bit hard to follow the options on filters
Am I correct don't use The GM OEM 3018 because morons above 4
Use cat and adaptor it is microns 2
Or use recor filter on page 144 it is micron 4
I understand there is a reading for microns
1) nominal
2) absolute
If we kiss keep it simple stupid is the recor filter on page 144 good enough low in microns to save injectors
We have a primary Baldwin filter on but now we find it 8 microns and we are looking for a lower reading
Also say a Baldwin bf9882 at parts store,,, made in china
Thanks

Yes sir, have been running one for about a year on an 05 LLY. I didn't want to loose my water separator so I use Donaldson filters with water bowls on the bottom. Never gelled or had an issue. Change at every other oil change. Great product IMO
