scmn | I milked 34 cows in a tie stall barn for 30 years. Bought the neighbors cows and milked in his barn for 6 months. Then built a new barn in 1983 when I was 23 with family financial help. Paid it off in 10 years. Looked at expanding in 1996 to 200 cows and just didn`t have it in me to do it. Sold the cows in 2013 when I was 53. I was burned out. No wife or kids at the time so I missed very few milkings in 30 years. Not bragging, actually now think I was dumb for doing it myself. Carpal tunnel, sore knees and shoulders are part of tie stall milking. Rent a barn with an ok parlor to see how you like it before building anything. Then you will know if you want a long term commitment. Don`t corner yourself with to much debt to start with. I got married for the first time in March of 2014. Now life is good. Corn and soybeans are a very part time job compared to milking. | |
