Could it just be a sprain? If it's just a sprain it will be swollen the same, he'll just heal up a lot faster. Even if it's a fracture and he's able to walk around, he will heal up eventually as long as he can keep himself calm.

I had a smaller calf (maybe 300lbs?) once that got his rear ankle broken by a bull when he was trying to play with the big boys (clearly a break because it healed crooked). He ended up limping around all summer and by fall you wouldn't know he once had a problem unless you knew where to look. I didn't splint it. Seems like you could potentially do more harm than good running him through the chute to put one on.
