Subject: WEANING/BACKGROUND RATION

All, I want to know what you think of our ration the local mill cooked up for us as a ration we use to wean calves and then feed for an additional 45 to 100 days.

I would like to cheapen it up and use more of my own corn. Stupid me got rid of our mix mill about 10 years ago but it was pretty much junk at the time.

855lbs Crimped Corn
855lbs Soy Hulls
250lbs 40% Beef Supplement
15lbs CTC
40lbs Molasses

This puts my cost figuring $4.00 corn at $.11 per lb.

The Beef Supplement and Soy Hulls are what really wist my tail.

Soy Hulls are $10.50CWT
Supplement $21.50CWT

We feed 550# calves about 6.5#'s per day with free choice fescue hay and hope once they get to eating to gain around 1.75#'s to 2#'s per day. This is after they have settled in and started eating. I don't want to get them fleshy but I would like to put on some solid gain. I these calves have had their first shots and boosters of Ultrabac 7way/Somubac, Polumo-Guard, and Vira Sheild.

Thoughts?
